The Middlemarch Singles Ball returns for the fifth biennial event. And those who do not yet have a ticket should be quick. They are selling fast. Ticket sales are limited to 700 and there will be no gate sales.
The idea for the Singles Ball came about when locals bemoaned the fact that they could not get a new district nurse and somebody commented they needed to many off one of the local fanners to a nurse. Before long, the idea of a match-making ball was in full swing.
The theme for the 2009 ball is "Some Bunny Loves You" with the evening kicking off at 7.15 with the arrival of the Taieri Gorge Train at Middlemarch from Dunedin. The train will be named the "Tui Love Train", resplendent with large love hearts, streamers and balloons.
A fashion parade will be staged on the railway platform and local boys and girls will strut their stuff.

The fun then moves to a marquee set up just a short stroll from the railway station in Pete's deer paddock. The marquee will be heated and a dance floor installed. Tidy dress is expected and no jeans!
A live band, The Suits, from Dunedin will play and a continuous supper will be available, featuring an awesome selection of fresh barbecue meats including venison, steak, chicken and pork. A cash bar and a variety of non-alcoholic refreshments will be available.
The Tui Love Train will depart Middlemarch at 12 midnight and a late licence will allow the remaining ball-goers to party the night away. For those who miss the midnight train home, the Taieri Gorge Railway will return at lunchtime Sunday and for $30 they can ride the "train of shame" back to Dunedin.
Tickets are available from the DCC iSITE Visitor Centre in the Octagon, phone (03) 477 4000, and the Middlemarch Police Station, phone (03) 464 3750.
